For 48.8% of young people, climate change is the most serious issue affecting the world today. While 78.1% said they were ready to change their lifestyles to protect the environment, 18.2% said they were worried about water and healthy food. On the other hand, only 15.9% of young people are worried about a lack of education, while 12.1% are worried about a lack of economic opportunities and unemployment. How serious young people are about climate issues and that they have founded their own climate protection movement is shown by the demonstrations “Friday for Future”, which are now taking place throughout Europe. It would be a big mistake to classify these young people only as skippers without taking their seriousness into account.
Climate change and food issues are closely linked, as agriculture makes a significant contribution to the production of greenhouse gases. Changes in diet towards more plant-based foods, towards meat from animals with little enteric fermentation and towards energy-efficient processed foods offer a challenging and little researched area to combat climate change.
In youth education and work, it is necessary to address these problems at an early stage. It is important not only to raise awareness of climate change and its impact on dietary patterns, but also to provide young people with the skills they need to contribute to sustainable lifestyles.
Therefore, the overall aim of the project is to provide access to successful approaches that qualify children, young people and youth workers across Europe to make responsible decisions about climate change policies. They must become aware of the impact of food on their health and climate and develop a constructive attitude towards environmental and nutrition issues.
